A Celebration of Material Culture
(during an exploration of still-life as self-portrait).
These are portraits of the things I live with, objects that have been passed down through my family, items I've used everyday for years and recent finds.
Plus friends doing curious things (often with objects)!
Shot with Tintype or on film and then printed with Cyanotype, the hand-made photographs give the viewer a glimpse into my self-created, pre-modern world, full of vintage objects and intriging stories. I keep these remnants of the past relevant by photographing them in settings and relationships which embrace or oppose their original purpose. The work can be humorous or upsetting, soothing or stimulating, telling stories of Memory/Loss, Isolation, desire and love of beautiful things. My passion for material culture, historic process, typography and storytelling drives me to create still-life images which are portraits of myself.
